The art of Scrimshaw dates back to the whaling days, over 200 years ago. the intricate carvings and engravings done by the American whalemen are accepted as one of America's most important folk arts.Scrimshaw refers to the carvings or engravings of assorted whalebones or ivories. Your scrimshaw on this knife handle is done on genuine shed antler from deer, elk, moose and other species that naturally lose their antlers each year.
Scrimshaw art developed as months at sea stretched into years. Men's idle hours were occupied by etching discarded whale bones and teeth with scenes of the voyage and pictures found in books. With the disappearance of whaling, the art of scrimshaw almost disappeared as well.

This nearly forgotten art is still being kept alive by us in the same manner as the bygone days of whaling, to create trasures of today, and tomorrow's heirlooms.
